Austin Kleon (“Steal Like an Artist”) traces blackout poetry back 250 years to Caleb Whitefoord, “who published a broadsheet of found poetry and puns he’d collected from some of the first-ever print newspapers.” Kleon found other examples of blackout poetry in the work of Parisian poet Tristan Tzara, artist Brion Gysin, and writers William S. Burroughs and Tom Phillips. Today blackout poetry has grown in popularity. It ranges from newspaper pages blacked out with black marker to elaborately decorated book pages.

I have made pencil drawings for as long as I can remember. They are the greatest form of tranquility. A few years ago I added pen and ink, which is more spontaneous because I cannot erase. I enjoy seeing how those drawings evolve and the problem solving they often require.

I have kept all of my sketchbooks, which serve as both journals and a place to plan paintings. I include all types of inspiration that I find in my daily life.
I often begin the day with an exercise, whether simple or more complicated, experimenting with pattern and repetition. Anything goes in the sketchbook.
I'll share a few of my pages here.
My religious icon paintings are experiments in black and white, and metal leaf, and are inspired by the icons of different times and nationalities.
